Therefore, everyone is encouraged to participate in social work and contribute to the nation with commitment and integrity.
Brief Overview of the National Service Scheme (NSS): The NSS was formally inaugurated on September 24, 1969, which marked the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, who emphasized the importance of involving students in national service. He urged students to consider their utmost responsibility as being ready to serve the community. The NSS is crucial for the holistic development of students’ personalities.

THE MOTTO The motto of NSS is “NOT ME BUT YOU”. This expresses the essence of democratic living, uphold the need for selfless service and appreciations of other man’s point of view. NSS SYMBOL It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of the NSS for social transformation, upliftment and integration. NSS Day is observed annually on September 24th with various programs and activities.The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a significant extracurricular endeavor that shifts the spotlight away from the traditional classroom setting. In this context, teachers take on the role of guides and coordinators, while students are the primary participants. Students actively contribute to the community and engage in the conservation of the physical environment. Simultaneously, they develop attributes such as leadership, teamwork, and the ability to identify and address community issues. This initiative fosters qualities like leadership, collective action, social responsibility, activism, and community involvement in students, thus molding them into well-rounded citizens. It also connects them closely with societal and environmental realities. Recognizing the vital role of NSS in nation-building, efforts are made to enhance NSS by increasing student participation, broadening the range of activities, and expanding the number of events. NSS Student Volunteer and NSS Certificate:An NSS volunteer is required to dedicate 120 hours to social work within one year or 240 hours over two years, participating in various programs and activities, including special camping. NSS volunteers should have a thorough understanding of the NSS objectives. Upon completing 240 hours of regular and special activities, a volunteer becomes eligible to receive an NSS Certificate. The Programme Officer (P.O.) serves as an organizer, educator, coordinator, and administrator to enhance the NSS program’s quality and impact in the School or institution. NSS is a student-centered activity that extends beyond classrooms, with teachers providing guidance while students take the lead. Students engage in community service, environmental conservation, and develop qualities like leadership, teamwork, social responsibility, and activism, making them well-rounded citizens. The aim is to strengthen NSS by increasing student participation and expanding event diversity to contribute to nation-building. |
There are two categories of activities/programs within the NSS:
Regular NSS Activities: In these activities, students engage in various endeavors within adopted villages, the college campus, and urban areas in Shimla. These activities take place during or after college hours.
Special Camping Activities/Programs: These involve organizing 7-day duration camps in adopted villages or urban slums.
